IU Music Live
IU Music Live is a video streaming project I started in 2008. Initially I had two goals:. the first was to to make the IU Opera Theater performances available to a wider audience, especially friends and family of the student performers who were unable to travel to Bloomington. Second, I also wanted to see if it was possible to serve high quality multi-camera video webcasts that maintained high production standards on a reasonable budget. I was also interested in making the web viewing experience interactive. The first webcasts featured simple chat, but in 2010 musicology students began live-blogging; adding historical and musical background information, and moderating discussion among viewers. For some webcasts I made mini-documentaries, interviews with the cast and cre, or background information on the opera, that played during intermission and are available from the on-demand streams. The project has seen great success. Since it’s inception, the site has had almost a half-million views and features 30 on-demand videos of operas and ballets, and orchestra, wind ensemble, and jazz band concerts.
In May of 2014 Conductor Caleb Young put together an orchestra of Jacobs School students to give the US premiere performance of a chamber orchestra arrangement of Mahler’s symphony No. 9 by Klaus Simon. Later that month we recorded the work. I served as producer and engineer for the recording. Here is a video made during the recording session.
duo parnas NOW! is the third album from Madalyn and Cicely Parnas. the CD features works by Lera Auerbach, William Bolcom, Paul Moravec and Charles Wuorinen. I recorded and edited the CD and produced one of the tracks. It is released on the Sheffield Labs label.
A Living Jazz Legend, musician and composer David Baker has made a distinctive mark on the world of music in his nearly 60-year career—as player , composer, and educator. In this richly illustrated volume, Monika Herzig explores Baker’s artistic legacy, from his days as a jazz musician in Indianapolis to his long-term gig as Distinguished Professor and Chairman of the Jazz Studies department at Indiana University. I remastered the accompanying CD from recordings that dated from the 1950s to present. Selections range from performances by Prof. Baker on trombone and cello to his ‘Third Wave’ classical compositions.
